Southern Banana Pudding
This Southern Banana Pudding is going to make you do a happy dance! This is my mother’s banana pudding recipe with a few additions of my own.
I always kind of knew how to make banana pudding, but you know how it is…when you’re cooking traditional recipes you’re looking for the flavor you tasted growing up.
I called my mom one night and asked her for the recipe. Of course, she has been making it for so long she was able to tell me how to make it from memory.
She makes the recipe three different ways so I had to tweak the recipe to make it work for me.
And let me tell you, this is not my favorite dessert, but now I think it’s going to be higher up on the list.
One thing I didn’t change was using crushed Nilla wafers in the mix vs. flour.
Depending on how many you add, the wafers can make your pudding a little darker, but it will taste so much better.
Growing up I stayed with my grandmother in Louisiana every summer until I turned 16. Where she lives people share a lot with each other.
I remember people would give my grandmother bananas amongst other things all of the time, but I remember bananas being one of the things people gave her a lot.
She made a dessert every week and when we had bananas, she always made banana pudding.
It wasn’t a big deal to me back then, but all of a sudden I need this recipe in my life! You won’t be able to get enough of this rich and creamy dish!

- 3 bananas - sliced
- 1 can of condensed milk
- 2 c of whole milk
- 2 whole eggs
- 1 tsp of vanilla
- 2 boxes of Nilla wafers
- 1 c of ground of Nilla wafers
- In a medium sized pot, add condensed milk and vanilla.
- Whisk whole milk and eggs until blended. Add to pot and whisk.
- Heat for about 10 minutes on low heat.
- Add ground Nilla wafers and whisk.
- Heat stirring occasionally until pudding like consistency forms (about 15-20 minutes).
- Remove the pudding from the heat and allow to cool for about 10 minutes.
- In baking dish, layer the bottom with Nilla wafers.
- Then add a layer of sliced bananas.
- Pour about a half a cup of pudding over the bananas and Nilla wafers (Just enough to cover them).
- Add an additional layer of Nilla wafers over the bananas.
- Pour remaining pudding over the Nilla wafers.
- Press Nilla wafers around the edge/on top of the dish.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least four to six hours before serving. The pudding needs additional time to thicken and set. Best refrigerated overnight.
